Emergency Medicine Residency

Emergency Medicine

The Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine, Southern Ohio Medical Center Division (OUCOM/SOMC) Emergency Medicine Residency is a four-year curriculum based on the standards for Emergency Medicine outlined in the Basic Documents for Postdoctoral Training established by the American College of Osteopathic Emergency Physicians (ACOEP) and approved by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA). The curriculum is the framework for the didactic portion of the program, with clinical exposure carefully selected to provide broad-based exposure to medical and surgical emergencies to complete the residency training.

Clinical rotations are arranged to expose residents to critical care, surgical subspecialties, i.e. (orthopaedics, ophthalmology, ENT), pediatrics, trauma, EMS, research and administration. A minimum of 22 months of emergency medicine rotations are arranged to provide a progressive level of responsibility for patient care. The seven core competencies are an integral part of both the didactic and clinical services. Residents are monitored daily and evaluated monthly by their preceptors and quarterly by the Program Director and the Director of Medical Education.
