Emergency Medicine at SOMC
Our mission is to provide excellent clinical training in osteopathic emergency medicine to meet the needs of our community.
The Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine, Southern Ohio Medical Center Division (OUCOM/SOMC) Emergency Medicine Residency is a four-year curriculum based on the standards for Emergency Medicine outlined in the Basic Documents for Postdoctoral Training established by the American College of Osteopathic Emergency Physicians (ACOEP) and approved by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA). The curriculum is the framework for the didactic portion of the program, with clinical exposure carefully selected to provide broad-based exposure to medical and surgical emergencies to complete the residency training.
SOMC is a 180-bed regional medical center in Appalachian Ohio with cardiothoracic surgery, intensive care, endovascular capabilities and has an aggregate 100,000 yearly emergency visits. Additional rotations are arranged to expose residents to critical care, surgical subspecialties including orthopedics, ophthalmology, ENT, pediatrics, trauma, EMS, obstetrics and gynecology (regional birthing center with over 1000 yearly deliveries), research and administration.
A minimum of 22 months of emergency medicine rotations are arranged to provide a progressive level of responsibility for patient care. The seven AOA core competencies are an integral part of both the didactic and clinical services. Residents are monitored daily and evaluated monthly by their preceptors and quarterly by the Program Director and the Director of Medical Education.
