EMR Faculty

John Kasper, DO

Dr. Kasper has more than 29 years of experience in the practice of Emergency Medicine, recently serving at Good Samaritan Hospital’s Trauma Center in Dayton. He has more than 30 years of US military service, attaining the rank of Brigadier General in the US Army Reserve, and recently retired with honors. Dr. Kasper is certified in Emergency Medicine by the American Osteopathic Board of Emergency Medicine He is a graduate of the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine, Philadelphia, PA, and completed his internship at Tripler Army Medical Center, Honolulu, HI. He holds extensive experience as an administrator, and program developer. He is pursuing a mini-fellowship in research through the Centers of Osteopathic Education and Research at the Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine.

William Angelos, MD

Dr. Angelos is the Director of Emergency Medicine at Southern Ohio Medical Center. He is certified in Emergency Medicine by the American Board of Emergency Medicine. Dr. Angelos received his MD from Albany Medical College, Albany, NY. He completed his internship and residency at the university of Pittsburgh. He holds a bachelor of arts in Biology from Western Maryland College, Westminster, MD. Dr. Angelos is an experienced manager, faculty member and instructor, serving as Chief of Staff in 2006. He is a clinical professor on staff at the Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine.

Jason Cheatham, DO, FACEP

Dr. Cheatham is assistant director of the Emergency Department at Southern Ohio Medical Center with special interest in cardiovascular emergency medicine and chest pain management. He is a clinical adjunct faculty member of the Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine. He received his medical degree from the Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine. He completed his Emergency Medicine Residency as chief resident at Akron General Medical Center and Children's Hospital Medical Center of Akron.  He is board-certified in emergency medicine and a Diplomate of the American Board of Emergency Medicine. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Biology from Shawnee State University here in Portsmouth.

Tom Carter, DO

Dr. Carter was an Emergency Medicine Resident Physician at St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center, Toledo, serving in the Level One Trauma Center (including Pediatric Level One Trauma and Acute Chest Pain Center) and served as a crew member of the Life Flight Critical Care Transport as a flight physician. An EMS instructor for the Ohio Dept. of Public Safety, he received his medical degree from the Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine, where he is completing a mini-fellowship in research with the Centers for Osteopathic Research and Education. He is currently in the ABEM certification process. He was a graduate magna cum laude with a bachelor of science in biology degree from Bowling Green State University.

Jason Johnson, DO

Dr. Johnson began his emergency medicine career as a paramedic/EMS instructor and worked for more than 10 years in EMS. He received his medical degree from the Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine with post-graduate training at the Northside Hospital and Heart Institute in St Petersburg, Florida (Internship) as well as Emergency Medicine Residency at the University of South Florida at Tampa General Hospital. He is ABEM certified. Dr Johnson has worked as an instructor for the Tampa Fire/Rescue and Aeromed Flight Program and is also international faculty and two-time guest speaker at the Indus-EM International Academic Meeting on Trauma, Emergency & Disaster Medicine in both New Delhi and Mumbai India. He is pursuing certification in Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonography.

Marcus Romanello, MD

Dr. Romanello received his medical degree from the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine and his bachelor of arts in psychology with minor in neuroscience from Miami University, Oxford, Ohio. He completed his internship in Christ Hospital’s Internal Medicine Residency Program and his residency in the University of Alabama Emergency Medicine Residency Program, Birmingham, AL, where he also served as Chief Resident. He is currently in the ABEM certification process. He holds special interests in ultrasound, simulation and procedural techniques.

Wayne Wheeler, MD

An accomplished instructor, director, and program developer and manager, Dr. Wheeler served as the medical director of the Emergency Dept. at Southern Ohio Medical Center for 13 years and is currently the medical director of LIFE Ambulance service in Portsmouth. In addition to his medical degree from the University of Illinois, he holds a Juris Doctor (JD) from the University of Illinois (1974), a Master in Business Administration (MBA), University of Illinois (1981), a Master of Public Health in Occupational Medicine from the Medical College of Wisconsin (2003), and a Bachelor of Science Degree (BS), University of Illinois (1966) in mathematics. He is ABEM certified. He holds a special interest in evidence-based medicine. He works in the SOMC Wound Healing Center and supervises Hyperbaric Oxygen therapy for chronic wound healing. He also manages a Suboxone Treatment clinic for opiod drug addiction outpatient withdrawal.
