A Message from the Director
Southern Ohio Medical Center brings residents to the forefront of medical education with a breadth and variety of opportunities for independent thinking that is often unavailable in metropolitan health care environments. While the participants of many large-city residency programs find themselves challenged for opportunities to gain much-needed experience as an attending physician, SOMC’s program presents all of its residents with stimulating practice opportunities and the chance to handle many situations in the clinical setting.
SOMC is unique as a health care system for the prospective resident because of our ability to provide more time with practicing medical professionals in a hospital where standards for quality are among the highest in the nation. In late 2008 open heart surgery will arrive at SOMC, and the preparation for the program has resulted in a dramatic $110 million expansion of facilities and technology. When complete, we will staff approximately 250 beds, maintain 19 surgical suites including six dedicated GI suites and three suites for heart and vascular procedures, and double our Emergency Department to 42 beds, with an accredited chest pain center.
Our medical staff of 150 physicians and specialists, many of whom are faculty members of the Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine (OUCOM) through the Centers for Osteopathic Research and Education (CORE), provide extensive interaction with residents. Participants in our program will find their time here exceptionally rewarding, and the medical presentations, types of illness and pathology encountered will provide valuable lessons for future practice.
SOMC has earned national honors for our commitment to quality. In January 2008 we became the first hospital in the tri-state region to achieve the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s (ANCC) highest honor, the Magnet recognition status, recognizing national excellence in nursing. Only 4 percent of hospitals in the U.S. can claim this distinction. Also in January we were named to Fortune Magazine’s “Best 100 Places To Work For In America,” for our commitment to our workforce needs and expectations, fairness, pride, credibility and respect. In 2007 we received a site visit as part of our application for the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award, a distinction achieved by only seven of 42 hospitals vying for the nation’s highest honor for quality.
On behalf of the faculty of SOMC’s Medical Education Program, I welcome you and invite you to explore the many options available here at Southern Ohio Medical Center.
