I131 Wholebody Thyroid Metastases Study

 

Indications:

  • Evaluation for functioning thyroid cancer, either recurrent in the thyroid bed or metastases.

Examination Time:

  • Initially: 30 minutes for radiopharmaceutical administration
  • Imaging @ 48 hours: 1 to 1.5 hours for whole body scan

Patient Preparation:

  • Patient must be off thyroid hormones
    1. Thyroxin ( T-4) for at least 4 weeks
    2. Triiodothyronine ( T-3) for at least 10 days
    3. Synthroid for at least 6 weeks
  • Patient must not have had intravenous or intrathecal iodinated contrast material (IVP, CT, Myelogram, and Angiogram for at least 3 weeks
  • Patient should be NPO for 4 hrs prior to administration and 1 hour afterwards

Radiopharmaceutical

  • I-131 as sodium iodide (capsule only)
  • 5.0 mCi
  • Oral Administration

Patient Position

  • Patient supine
  • Whole body (may exclude below the knees)
