At SOMC, as part of our journey to sustained excellence, we continually measure how we compare to hospitals in the region and the nation. In most key quality indicators of excellence, SOMC ranks among the top 10 percent of hospitals in the United States. Recently, a new report issued by the Department of Health & Human Services presented SOMC as having 30 day mortality rates in Acute Myocardial Infarctions (major heart attacks) poorer than the national rate. It also published our Heart Failure rate as the same as the rates for other hospitals in the nation.
This report is very concerning to us. At SOMC, we have sustained evidence of clinical excellence in the treatment of both heart attack and heart failure. We are dedicated to measuring outcomes and developing solutions to improve these rates. As part of our efforts, we will publish mortality rates along with our clinical measures that we have been tracking for several years.
