Lungs for Life
Did you know that lung cancer is the most frequently diagnosed cancer in Scioto County and that it is also responsible for more cancer related deaths than any other cancer? Yet lung cancer is one of the most preventable cancers. Tobacco use is the major cause of the disease.
The SOMC foundation board has committed to assist SOMC in attempting to make a difference in this disease. The group has donated $16,000 to start a Lungs for Life lung cancer screening project. This program offers a low dose screening CT scan to community members that meet established eligibility criteria.
The screening is free to those who meet the medical criteria for the screening.
The CT scan results will be sent to the ordering physician and the Lung Health Navigator, Kimberlee Richendollar RN, BSN. The participant will receive a packet full of smoking cessation education and a follow-up letter with the results of CT scan and further steps if necessary.
To qualify for the screening you must be:
- Age 40-70 and
- A pack-a-day smoker for 15 years or
- A 2 pack-a-day smoker for 7 1/2 years or
- A former pack-a-day smoker for 15 years and has stopped smoking no more than 10 years ago.
The screening is free to those who meet the medical criteria for the screening.
