A Message from the Director
Southern Ohio Medical Center offers outstanding educational opportunities to residents and medical students through services and experiences that are not always available withlarger metropolitan hospital programs. SOMC residents gain a unique advantage throughinvolvement in all aspects of clinical medicine right from the start of their training. While residents in large city programs may find themselves challenged to gain this initial level of independence, SOMC residents flourish in anexceptional educational environment where they immediately achieve the knowledge, clinical skills, and confidence to handle the many situations that arise in clinical practice.
SOMC is able to create this high-level educational experience though a unique health care system. Residents are not only able to collaborate with other residents, but also receive direct clinical instruction through attending physicians who work in ahospital system with some of the nation’s highest standards for quality. SOMC is a 222-bed hospital that includes a fully operational Intensive Care Unit, Emergency Department, dedicated obstetric floor, and a new Senior Behavioral Medicine Care Unit. SOMC also runs 12 surgical suites including seven GI and pulmonary suites. SOMC is a fully accredited chest pain center that includes suites dedicated to advanced vascular and open heart surgical procedures. In addition to these services, SOMC has been able to expend its primary, urgent, and specialty care services into the surrounding counties and their communities.
SOMC maintains a staff of more than 150 physicians and specialists, many of whom are appointed faculty members of the Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine (OU-HCOM). This relationship is made possible through the Centers for Osteopathic Research and Education (CORE), an integratedmedical education consortium with many affiliated hospitals statewide. SOMC has astrong, long-standing relationship with OU-HCOM and the CORE, providing a high quality educational standard for our residents and medical students, and we look forward to continuing this partnership for many years to come.
Participants in our program find their time and training incredibly rewarding, and are able to experience a structured curriculum that is up-to-date with the most current nation standards for residency training. It is through this curriculum and the wide variety of clinical experiences that our residents are able to obtain the training that will serve them throughout their medical career.
SOMC has earned national honors for our commitment to quality. In January 2008 we became the first hospital in the tri-state region to achieve the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s (ANCC) highest honor of Magnet status, which recognizes national excellence in nursing. In 2012, SOMC was one of just 620 hospitals nationwide to be named as one of the Joint Commission’s “Top Performers on Key Quality Measures.” In 2012, SOMC was also proud to announce that it placed 10th nationally in Modern Healthcare’s “Best Places to Work.”
On behalf of the faculty of SOMC’s Medical Education Program, I welcome and invite you to explore the many opportunities available here at Southern Ohio Medical Center.
