Minimally Invasive Heart Surgery
What is Minimally Invasive Heart Surgery?
Minimally invasive heart surgery is performed through a small, two to four inch incision in the patient’s chest cavity, dramatically reducing the scarring that might occur. Specialized surgical instruments are used therefore making it possible so that there is no sternal chest bone cut when using this minimally invasive approach.
What are the advantages of this type of heart surgery?
This technique reduces the risk of post-operative infection and causes less bleeding, pain and trauma to the chest cavity. The procedure greatly decreases the length of stay in the hospital and lessens the overall recovery time at home after open heart surgery. After minimally invasive surgery, the average hospital stay is 3-4 days, compared to the average stay of 7 to 8 days with traditional open heart surgery where the sternal bone is cut. With minimally invasive heart surgery, a patient can be back to “normal life activities” in a matter of 2-4 weeks.
Can I get this surgery done in other hospitals?
Southern Ohio Medical Center is leading the way in heart and vascular services when it comes to performing minimally invasive heart surgery procedures. Less than 5% of hospitals across the United States currently perform this innovative surgery.
How do I know if I'm a candidate for this surgery?
Not every patient is a candidate for minimally invasive heart surgery. Our team will review the results of your diagnostic tests before your scheduled procedure to determine if you are a candidate for this surgical option. The surgical team will thoroughly discuss the advantages and disadvantages of minimally invasive techniques versus the traditional surgery techniques to identify the best option for you.
