SOMC presents at National Magnet Conference

Southern Ohio Medical Center presented at the 2008 American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) National Magnet Conference in Salt Lake City, Utah.

ANCC is the world’s largest and most prestigious nurse credentialing organization, and a subsidiary of the American Nurses Association (ANA).

The topic of presentation, shared with several hundred in attendance, was, “Using the dashboard to disseminate data and communicate excellence”. Valerie DeCamp, director of Inpatient Nursing Services; Claudia Buchett, vice president of Patient Services and Karen Thompson, director of Home Care Services served as presenters at the event.

Basic Life Support Classes at SOMC Open to the Public

Southern Ohio Medical Center will offer Basic Life Support classes at the SOMC East Campus, Gibson Building, beginning in January, 2009. Classes are held from 7:30 to 11:30 a.m. or from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. on the following days: Jan. 23, Feb. 11, March 24, April 28, May 11, June 29, July 29, Aug. 25, Sept. 22, Oct. 27, Nov. 10 and Dec. 8, 2009.

The classes are free to all SOMC employees and a fee of $25 per person will be charged to non-employees. Fees do not represent income to the American Heart Association. Registration is required. Non-employees contact Workforce Development at 356-2733. Employees may schedule through API using course code AHA101.

ACLS Classes at SOMC Open to the Public

Southern Ohio Medical Center will offer Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) classes at the SOMC East Campus, Gibson Building, beginning in January, 2009. Classes are held over a two day period, from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. both days. Classes will be offered: Jan. 27-28, April 21-22, July 20-21 and Oct. 20-21.

Contact hours will be given (14.5) for Nurses in attendance for 80% of the program. A total of 14.25 contact hours prescribed credits will be given by the AAFP for physicians.

The classes are free to all SOMC employees and a fee of $200 per person will be charged to non-employees. Fees do not represent income to the American Heart Association. Registration is required. Non-employees contact Workforce Development at 356-2733. Employees may schedule through API using course code AHA201.

Planners and presenters have no conflicts of interest or lack thereof. No commercial support is provided for this course. Study Guides will be sent approximately 2 weeks before each class. Pre-requisites required. Basic knowledge of cardiac rhythms is required for this course. Management of Critical Care Drips Classes at SOMC Open to the Public

Southern Ohio Medical Center will offer educational classes on Management of Critical Care Drips, part 1 and 2, at the SOMC East Campus, Gibson Building, beginning in January 2009. Part one of the class is held from 8 a.m. to noon and Part two is held from 1 to 5 p.m.

Contact hours will be given (4.5) for Nurses in attendance for 80% of the program.

Southern Ohio Medical Center (OH-098/12/1/11) is an approved provider of continuing nursing education by the Ohio Nurses Association, (OBN-001-91), an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation.

The classes are free to all SOMC employees and a fee of $60 per person will be charged to non-employees. Registration is required. Non-employees contact Workforce Development at 356-2733. Employees may schedule through API using course code CCN028 and CCN029.

Infectious Disease Specialist Babic Welcomed At SOMC

Maja Babic, MD, a physician specializing in infectious diseases, has been welcomed to the medical staff of Southern Ohio Medical Center.

Dr. Babic received her medical degree from the Belgrade Medical School, Belgrade, Yugoslavia. She completed a residency in Internal Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and a fellowship in Infectious Diseases at the University Hospitals of Cleveland. She also completed internships at the University Hospitals of Belgrade and University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, and served as a general practitioner at Belgrade Medical Center. She and her husband, Dr. Claus Simpfendorfer, a radiologist practicing at Southern Ohio Medical Center, reside in the West Portsmouth area with their two children.

Suttles joins Umhoefer Practice

Jill Suttles, FNP, B.C., has joined the practice of Dr. Kimberly Umhoefer, 1735 27th Street, Waller Bldg., Suite 204, on the main campus of Southern Ohio Medical Center.

Suttles earned her degree as a board certified, Family Nurse Practitioner from Marshall University. She is also a Registered Nurse with 16 years nursing experience prior to receiving her nurse practitioner’s certification. Suttles and her family reside in Wheelersburg.

Dr. Umhoefer’s practice specializes in Internal Medicine and provides both inpatient and outpatient care to adult patients 18 years and older. For information or to schedule an appointment, call 355-8930.

Lichtenstein Certified

Sonja Lichetenstein, M.D., General Surgeon at Southern Ohio Medical Center, recently received her certification in wound care from the Council for Medical Education and Testing.

Dr. Lichtenstein received her medical degree from State University of New York and completed her training at Iowa Methodist Medical Center. She is board certified in general surgery.

Breast Cancer Support Group

The Breast Cancer Support group will meet on Wednesday, Dec. 17 at 1 p.m. at the Golden Corral restaurant in New Boston. This will be the annual Christmas party. LIFE Center to begin Youth Conditioning Program

Southern Ohio Medical Center’s LIFE Center will begin a Youth Conditioning Program on Jan. 6, 2009. The classes will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6 to 7 p.m. at the Portsmouth facility.

Children ages 8 to 14-years-old are invited to participate. Classes are supervised by certified personal trainers and group fitness instructors. Fees may be paid monthly and are $40 for LIFE Center members and $50 for non-members. New participants may join at any time.
