SOMC Nursing Leaders Present at Magnet Conference

Nursing leaders at Southern Ohio Medical Center recently presented “The Transformational Practice of Strategic Value Leadership” to a crowd of more than 500 people during the 2010 American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) National Magnet Conference Oct. 13-15 in Phoenix, Ariz.

“Since January 2008, SOMC has been a Magnet designated hospital, one of only six percent in the country,” Claudia Burchett, vice president of SOMC Patient Services and chief nursing officer, said. “We strive to create an atmosphere of excellence using our five strategic values: safety, service, quality, performance and relationships. At the conference we spoke about these values and were met with an enthusiastic response.”

ANCC is the world’s largest and most prestigious nurse credentialing organization and a subsidiary of the American Nurses Association (ANA). More than 6,000 nurses representing all 50 states and countries around the world annually attended the conference, which explores nursing excellence in clinical practice, leadership and research through educational sessions and poster presentations.

“This is the third year we have presented and hope to do so again in the future,” Burchett added. “We look forward to attending next year’s conference and continuing our organization’s journey toward excellence.”

 

ACS Offers Prostate Cancer Support Group

Man to Man® is an American Cancer Society support program for men with prostate cancer. The support group will meet at 5 p.m., Nov. 2 at the SOMC Cancer Center located at 1121 Kinneys Lane in Portsmouth. Dr. Paul Crabtree, a licensed professional clinical counselor, will be the guest speaker. The SOMC Cancer Center’s breast cancer support group recently celebrated National Breast Cancer Awareness Month with a luncheon, door prizes, giveaways and a special guest speaker, Stephanie Schaefer. SOMC Honored Medical Staff for Years of Service

Southern Ohio Medical Center recently held a Medical Staff Celebration of Excellence, a service awards banquet to honor SOMC physicians. Mr. Randy Arnett, president and CEO of SOMC welcomed the attendees and acknowledged the medical students, residents and new physicians. The honorees presented with awards for five years of service were Dr. Sadiq Al-Nakeeb, Dr. Reshma Banerjee, Dr. Jody Brahney, Dr. Li-Fen Chang, Dr. Jeffery Williams; 10 years of service were Dr. Wahidul Islam, Dr. Scott Logan and Dr. Robert Newman. Dr. Jaime Pua and Dr. Yong Song were honored as the 2010 retirees.

Dr. Ronald Arrick was honored for his 30 years of service with SOMC.

SOMC Train and Merchant Expo Last Call for Crafters

Southern Ohio Medical Center will celebrate with the holiday season with its familiar holiday celebration, Winter Wonderland. Part of the weeklong celebration is the ever-popular Train and Merchant Expo. The Winter Wonderland Train and Merchant Expo will be held Saturday, Nov. 27 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday, Nov. 28 from noon to 4 p.m. The Merchant Expo tables are filling up fast and limited space is available for craft and vendor booths. All booths are free of cost. Participants will be provided an 8×10 ft. area. Vendors can set up their booths on Friday, Nov. 26 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Registration by Nov. 5 is required. Southern Ohio Medical Center’s Respiratory Care, Pulmonary Diagnostic and Sleep Study departments recently celebrated World Spriometer Day at the SOMC Lucasville LIFE Center. Several attendees participated in the free lung health screenings. Shawnee State University respiratory students volunteered during the event. SOMC Celebrates 25th Anniversary of the LIFE Center

Southern Ohio Medical Center recently celebrated the 25th Anniversary of the SOMC LIFE Center, Oct. 14. The event featured an open house, facility tours, door prizes, free health screenings, group fitness demonstrations, business after hours and refreshments. More than 70 blood pressure and cholesterol screenings were conducted and the business after hours was well attended. SOMC would like to thank LIFE Ambulance for providing and cooking food during the celebration. SOMC employees, Kathy Pyles (standing, left) and Keri Imm (standing, right) help participants with cholesterol and glucose screenings.

SOMC Rehab Care Unit Offers Stroke Support Group

The Rehab Care Unit at Southern Ohio Medical Center offers a monthly support group for patients and family members suffering from a stroke. The Moving Forward After Stroke Support Group will meet from 4 to 5 p.m. Oct. 27 in the Rehab Care Unit Conference Room, located on the SOMC Main Campus, 1805 27th Street, Portsmouth. Sean Miller, will be the key speaker for the event and will present education on stroke prevention. Pre-registration is not required and the meeting is open to everyone. American Savings Bank Donates to SOMC Breast Cancer Compassion Fund

 

ASB Makes donation

Employees and customers of American Savings Bank recently donated nearly $400 to the Southern Ohio Medical Center Breast Cancer Compassion Fund, which provides assistance to local breast cancer patients.  ASB employees paid to wear jeans to work in an effort to raise money in honor of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. American Savings Bank also invited customers to donate to the cause.
