Southern Ohio Medical Center will offer a new group fitness class, called BodyFlow™, at 5:30 p.m. Jan. 18 at the SOMC LIFE Center. BodyFlow™ was created by fitness celebrity, Les Mill’s and is a combination of Yoga, Tai Chi and Pilates. During the class, one can expect to improve joint flexibility, increase core strength, improve cardio-vascular function, reduce stress levels and provide a lasting sense of well being and calm. BodyFlow™ participants can expect 45 minutes of intense, yet slow movements and positions, ending with ten minutes of relaxation and meditation. LeAnne Blackburn, a group fitness instructor at SOMC, has been certified in BodyFlow™ and will teach the class at 5:40 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays. She is also certified in ACE (American Counsel on Exercise), Turbo Kick and Zumba™ Levels 1 and 2. “I’ve been a group fitness instructor for eight years,” Blackburn said. “But the high-intensity of cardio workouts have begun to cause wear and tear on my joints. I chose to become certified in BodyFlow™ because I wanted a class that is better for my body. As we age, we tend to lack things such as core strength, balance and flexibility.” Blackburn explained that her BodyFlow™ certification included a three-day intense training and a follow-up video demonstrating her abilities to teach BodyFlow™. Along with Blackburn’s certification, fitness instructors Cindy Burkhardt and Christi Riepenhoff have also been certified in BodyFlow™. “Everyone lives a fast pace life these days and we forget to slow down and focus on our physical and mental health,” she added. “BodyFlow™ is for men and women of all ages and is particularly good for men because they tend to ignore flexibility.” For those interested in trying the BodyFlow™ class, demonstrations will be available to the public during the SOMC LIFE Center Open House from 5 to 7 p.m., Friday, Jan. 14 at the LIFE Center, 1202 18th St. in Portsmouth. The LIFE Center plans to add an early morning and mid-morning BodyFlow™ class for members in the near future. For more information, please contact the SOMC LIFE Center at 740-356-7650.
