David Arnold, RN, BSN

The Intensive Care Unit at SOMC is a 16-bed unit responsible for the care of critically ill patients of all age groups and all diagnoses. The unit is centrally monitored and maintains a 1:2 nurse/patient ratio. Our team consists of Critical Care Intensivists, RNs, Nurse Technicians, Nurse Residents and Unit Clerk/Monitor Techs.

The ICU provides patient centered care in an environment that is family focused allowing families to be present during procedures, care and resuscitation efforts. The Intensive Care Unit welcomes guests and loved ones of our patients 24 hours a day. We also welcome visits from a patient’s personal cat or dog as well.

Our unit was designed by the staff for optimal efficiency and patient care. We are proud of our open and spacious unit which provides private areas for care teams to meet and allows visual contact with all 16 patient rooms. Our sophisticated monitoring system also provides immediate response to patients.

The SOMC ICU has won awards and gained state and national attention for innovative programs such as our orientation and preceptor program for nurses and our Love Your Heart program, where we teach kindergarten students the importance of heart health.

Our nurses self-schedule their shifts, allowing for greater flexibility and increased satisfaction. Our unit also uses unit based teams where decisions about improving safety, quality, patient and employee satisfaction are made.
