The Pediatric Unit at SOMC is a 12-bed unit staffed with 12 professionally trained staff members who are committed to providing the highest quality of nursing care to pediatric patients. Our average daily census is 2.3 patients with an average length of stay of 1.9 days.
The pediatric unit employs a multidisciplinary team approach to provide optimal care for our patients. This team is comprised of physicians, nurses, social workers, respiratory therapists, patient relations, chaplains and physical therapists. All pediatric nurses are certified in Pediatric Advanced Life Support.
Caring for the family is an important function of the Pediatric staff. We provide a bed, shower and meals for the parents or caregivers of our patients. In addition, each patient room has a TV and VCR, hand-held games and other diversional activities for patients.
The pediatric unit is located on the first floor of the west wing of the SOMC Main Campus.
In addition to caring for pediatric inpatients, we also offer several unique services including:
TLC Sick Child Care Program
A service for SOMC employees, the TLC program provides sick child care to children who are too ill to be taken to daycare. Admission is based on availability on our unit. This service helps hospital employees avoid having to take time off from work to care for a sick child.
Outpatient Procedures
These include injections, pulse oximetry checks, bilirubin checks and other procedures ordered by our pediatricians.
Pediatric Conscious Sedation
This is for children who require medication to calm them before having a procedure performed.
Kids Care Hotline
This is a resource for parents in the area who have questions about pediatric care. When they call our hotline at 356-KIDS, they get to talk to one of our registered nurses who can answer their questions.
Area Resource
SOMC has become the resource center for the area and for other hospitals caring for children.
Attention RNs and LPNs: If you don’t find an available nursing position that you are interested in listed on our jobs online page, contact nurse recruiter Jill Preston to find out what very good things are happening at SOMC.
