From Inspiration to Impact: Local Doctor on a Mission to Make a Difference
For many healthcare professionals, the desire to pursue a career in medicine is driven by a personal experience of someone who deeply influenced them. For Dr. Katherine Redmond, that inspiration came from her mother’s determination.
“Growing up, I watched my mom go back to school to become a nurse practitioner while I was in elementary school,” she said. “Seeing her dedication, resilience, and the way she cared for her patients left a lasting impression on me.”
That early inspiration grew into a lifelong calling. Watching her mother gracefully balance giving her all to her family, school and her career motivated Redmond to follow in her footsteps. She knew she wanted to make a difference in the lives of children and young athletes.
Redmond brings a wide range of experience in pediatrics and sports medicine. From her early involvement in campus recreation to completing a pediatric residency at Marshall University, working with Marshall Athletics during her fellowship, and supporting high school athletic departments, she has developed a deep understanding of leadership, teamwork, and compassionate care.
“That early exposure showed me that medicine isn’t just about treating illness—it’s about building relationships, supporting growth and being present for a community,” she said.
All of that experience prepared her for her current roles: pediatrician at SOMC Pediatric Associates – Vanceburg and, most recently, Medical Director of SOMC Sports Motion.
Dr. Redmond is excited to take on this new, additional role to make a positive impact on local students and their access to athletic training services.
“Increasing access to athletic trainers means safer environments for students, earlier intervention for injuries, and better support for the health and well-being of young athletes,” she said. “I look forward to helping build those connections and creating a stronger system of care.”
Dr. Redmond’s heart for giving back to children and young athletes stems from her commitment to providing care to those with limited access.
“The most rewarding part of my job is serving kids in underserved communities,” she said. “Providing support, resources, and care where it's needed most is both humbling and motivating.”
Seeing the direct impact on her patients and students is what drives her to continue growing and giving her best. “Every day, I’m inspired by the resilience of the kids and families I work with,” she said. “Knowing that I can be part of improving their access to care and helping them thrive keeps me motivated to keep growing and giving my best.”
