SOMC Employees Raise Over $30,000 in 10th Annual Breast Cancer Fund Bike Ride

Steve and Kim Finley, both dedicated employees of Southern Ohio Medical Center (SOMC), recently hosted their 10th Annual Breast Cancer Fund Bike Ride. The event continues to grow in impact and participation each year. This year's ride raised more than $30,000 for the SOMC Breast Cancer Compassion Fund, nearly doubling the amount raised just three years ago.

Over 100 riders came out to support the cause. The event also featured live music, food, and raffles for participants to enjoy after the ride.

The funds raised go directly to the SOMC Breast Cancer Compassion Fund, which provides support for breast cancer patients in need. The fund helps cover essentials such as medication co-pays, transportation to and from treatment, and other necessities that can ease the burden of care during a difficult time.

As nurses, Steve and Kim are used to caring for patients within the hospital, but through their annual bike ride, they’re able to gather the community together for a great cause and give back to those battling cancer.

Kim reflected on a powerful experience that reminded her of what keeps her motivated to continue organizing this event year after year.

“I was able to attend one of the Look Good Feel Better programs with a friend of mine battling cancer,” she said. “It was nice to see first-hand what part of the money we raise goes towards. Watching the patient's smile, laugh, and enjoy themselves definitely left an impact on me.”

“If what we do can put a smile on someone's face or take a little stress away during a difficult time in their life, then we are making a difference and accomplishing what we intend with our event,” she said.

Steve and Kim say the ride’s success and growth over its 10 years wouldn’t be possible without the steadfast support of the community.

“We’re grateful for our friends and community who continue to help and support our event. Without them, it wouldn’t be as successful as it is each year,” Kim said. To learn more about the SOMC Breast Cancer Compassion Fund and how you can support patients in need, please visit somc.org/support-us.
