SOMC Implementing New DV5 Robotic Surgery System

Southern Ohio Medical Center is adding a new tool to their surgery toolkit by implementing a state-of-the-art robotic surgery system.

The Da Vinci 5 (DV5) robot is the newest generation of intuitive robotic surgical systems. It helps surgeons by improving their view and precision in procedures. It has 3D vision and a magnified view, and provides robotic and computer assistance. The DV5 is intended to enhance, not replace, the skill and expertise of physicians.

“We are bringing advanced care closer to home. This is an exciting advancement and will lead to an even better patient experience,” Julie Thornsberry, SOMC Director of Surgical Services, said. “With the DV5, our patients will benefit from safer surgeries, smaller incisions, and faster recoveries.”

The DV5 robot helps providers be more efficient and save time without compromising patient safety. SOMC will use the DV5 in a number of areas, including general surgery, OB/GYN, urology, and thoracic surgeries.

Funds raised from the 2025 SOMC Development Foundation’s Golden Gala event support the operational expenses for the DV5.
