SOMC Now Offers Testing for Diabetic Retinopathy
Did you know SOMC now offers testing for Diabetic retinopathy?
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is the leading cause of vision loss in working-age adults.
What is DR, and what is the cause?
Diabetic retinopathy occurs when the blood vessels in the back of the eye are damaged due to high blood sugar levels or there is a buildup of fluid in the macula. Diabetic retinopathy is a complication of diabetes, and most diabetics will develop some form of eye disease in their lifetime.
Using the LumineticsCore technology, SOMC is now able to automatically detect more than mild DR in adults (22 years of age or older) with diabetes. Early detection can prevent blindness in up to 98% of patients.
- This product allows for results before the patient leaves the office.
- Most specialist referrals have been seen in a week or less.
- From start to finish, testing can typically be completed in less than 10 minutes
- Testing is only needed once a year
- Most results can be captured without dilation
Please note, LumineticsCore does not replace a full eye exam, but it will find diabetic retinopathy that needs to be examined by an eye doctor. Patients who have been previously diagnosed with diabetic retinopathy, have previous retina damage, or severe cataracts should be referred directly to an ophthalmologist.
