SOMC Named a FORTUNE 100 Best Company to Work For

Southern Ohio Medical Center learned today that not only has the organization been named to the FORTUNE 100 Best Companies to Work For list for the third year in a row, but also moved up five spots. The full list and related stories will appear in the Feb. 8 issue of FORTUNE magazine, available on newsstands on Monday, Jan. 25, and now at fortune.com/bestcompanies.

"We are truly proud to once again be named to this prestigious list," said Randy Arnett, President and CEO of Southern Ohio Medical Center. "It continues to confirm that we have excellent employees who love what they do and show it through the care they provide."

FORTUNE Deputy Managing Editor Hank Gilman says, "The most important considerations for this year's list were hiring and the ways in which companies are helping their employees weather the recession. All 100 companies on our list are currently hiring, many of the aggressively, leading to more than 96,000 open job positions expected in the next year."

To pick the 100 Best Companies, FORTUNE partners with the Great Place to Work Institute to conduct the most extensive employee survey in corporate America. Two-thirds of a company's score is based on the results of the Institute's Trust Index survey, which is sent to a random sample of employees from each company. The survey asks questions related to their attitudes about the management's credibility, job satisfaction and camaraderie. The other third of the scoring is based on the company's responses to the Institute's Culture Audit, which includes detailed questions about pay and benefit programs and a series of open-ended questions about hiring, communication and diversity.

SOMC Named Best Employer in Ohio

Southern Ohio Medical Center has once again been ranked first among the Best Employers in Ohio, making an appearance on the list for the fifth consecutive year. The Society for Human Resource Management, Ohio State Council and Best Companies Group recently announced that Southern Ohio Medical Center has once again been ranked first among the Best Employers in Ohio.

"This is quite an honor for our organization and further proves that SOMC houses some of the best employees in the nation," SOMC CEO Randy Arnett said. "The selection is based largely on the survey of our own employees and their view of our organization and says a lot about us as a quality employer and a great place to work."

The survey and awards program was designed to identify, recognize and honor the Best Employers in Ohio, benefiting the state's economy, its workforce and businesses. The distinction is given based on an evaluation of various attributes including hiring processes, celebration in the workplace, caring among team members and communication.

"We are very proud of the family atmosphere here at SOMC, which resonates in our relationships with one another and with our patients," Vicki Noel, vice president of SOMC Human Resources, said. "This recognition, along with our Magnet Designation, VPP Star Status and FORTUNE Best Places to Work distinction, not only emanates pride to our community through employees, but also strengthens our recruitment and retention efforts."

The 2010 Best Employers list is made up of companies split into three categories: small sized (15-24 employees), medium-sized (25-249 employees) and large-sized (250 employees or more). SOMC has been named among other large companies and is on the list for the fifth consecutive year.

To be considered for participation, companies had to fulfill eligibility requirements which include being a for-profit, not-for-profit business or government entity; being a publicly or privately held business; having a facility in Ohio; having at least 15 employees in Ohio; and being in business for a minimum of one year.

Companies are then required to enter a two-part survey process to determine the Best Employers list.

The first section of the survey evaluates each nominated company's workplace policies, practices, philosophy, systems and demographics; the second measures employee experience and satisfaction. The combined scores determine the top companies and the final ranking, managed by the Best Companies Group.
