SOMC approaches lung health and lung cancer with a multidisciplinary approach. We understand that an effective lung health program begins with the community and community providers and extends across the health care continuum.
The SOMC Lung Health program encompasses all aspects of lung health beginning with education about the importance of maintaining healthy lungs by abstinence from tobacco, incorporating cardiovascular exercise and other prevention techniques. Next, SOMC provides education and resources to assist individuals, groups, and worksites to stop tobacco use, extending to promotion of lung screening resources when appropriate, and finally linkage to providers, testing, and navigation as appropriate.
To accomplish these goals and ensure a multidisciplinary approach, SOMC has developed a Lung Health Leadership Team (LHLT). The goal of the LHLT team is to increase access to care and to optimize its delivery. When these goals align they will directly lead to a decrease in the rate of mortality from lung cancer in our region. This multidisciplinary team is comprised of health professionals from community health, pulmonary, radiology, surgical, medical oncology, radiation oncology, lung navigation, administration, and SOMC provider offices. The LHLT meets regularly and tracks performance on important metrics to ensure safe and quality care. In addition to the LHLT, SOMC hosts weekly dedicated lung nodule and lung cancer discussions in a multidisciplinary format.
