Rally With SOMC To Knock Diabetes Out Of The ParkPosted on February 25, 2011

Southern Ohio Medical Center invites the community to rally together in an effort to knock diabetes out of the park during a free health screening event from 2 to 6:30 p.m. March 7 at the Friends Community Center, 1202 18th St. in Portsmouth. “Diabetes is one of the leading causes of death in Scioto County, with more than 30 percent of our population battling the disease,” Jill Preston, manager of SOMC Workforce Development, said. “Nationally these numbers are even higher—but these statistics could significantly decrease if people took the time to learn about diabetes, the proper ways to manage it and the ways it can be prevented.” Screenings for the baseball-themed event will begin at 2 p.m. and will include total cholesterol, blood sugar, blood pressure, body mass index, waist circumference, A1C and a diabetes risk analysis. Additional health information about diabetes will be available and a special Nintendo Wii Home Run Derby will also take place at 3 p.m. “This event will be a fun way to bring attention to an important issue and we strongly encourage anyone who thinks they may be at risk, or are interested in learning more about the disease, to join us for an exciting evening,” Preston added. Pre-registration for the screenings is required. For more information or to schedule your appointment, please call 740-356-8605.
