After counseling and if genetic testing is indicated a genetic test is ordered. The results of the genetic test can confirm or rule out a suspected genetic condition or help determine a person’s chance of developing or passing on a genetic disorder.
People have many different reasons for being tested or not being tested. For many, it is important to know whether a disease can be prevented if a gene alteration causing a disease is found. For example, those who have inherited forms of breast or colon cancer have options such as screening or early treatment.
Results of testing are important to the patient but may be equallymore important to other potentially affected family members.
Who do you call if you have questions?
