Magnetic Resonance Imaging

What is MRI?
MRI, Magnetic Resonance Imaging, is a way for Physicians to view internal structures of the human body. MRI uses no ionizing radiation and is found to have no known biological effects on the body. This technology uses radio waves and a magnetic field to get pictures of the body.
What is MRA?
MRA, Magnetic Resonance Angiography, and MRV, Magnetic Resonance Venography, are procedures for imaging the arteries and veins in the body. Often times the MRA and MRV studies are non-invasive ( no-injection). There are some MRA and MRV studies that will require a contrast injection. The injection is in the arm as if you were having blood tests and or giving blood. The contrast we use in MRI is unlike the contrast that is used for CT scanning and/ or Kidney X-Rays.

At SOMC we currently house two state-of-the-art high-field short-bore MRI systems. These scanners are open on both ends and are only about 4 feet in length. This helps to eliminate the feeling of claustrophobia. Our high field systems enable us to perform the specialty MRI exams right here in your area. Our short bore systems can accommodate patients up to 350lbs.
We also house a state-of-the-art open MRI system. Our open MRI system is a great addition to our facilities and enables us to provide quality service to our patients who could not undergo traditional MRI imaging. Our open system can accommodate those patients up to 440lbs.
At SOMC we have the comfort of our patients in mind. We have added satellite radio to all three of our scanners. This way when you come in the music you like is only a button push away. This is yet another way we want to make your experience a very positive one.(Yes, we have been known to sing upon request.)
Our goal is to make our patients feel comfortable with their MRI experience. Whether it is a blanket from our blanket warmer, a pillow for your comfort or just an explanation about your MRI exam from one of our quality team members, we will treat you with the dignity and respect you expect and deserve.
