Genetic Services & Testing

The SOMC Cancer Center offers genetic services related to cancer. A cancer risk assessment and genetic testing help identify hereditary and genetic factors, allowing for appropriate next steps to significantly reduce the risk of certain cancers. They also can assist in identifying appropriate family members who may benefit from screening, prevention, and other risk reduction strategies.

Genetic counseling is provided through SOMC trained City of Hope Certified Genetic Risk Assessment Provider. Talk to your provider about the next steps for you if you are interested in cancer-related genetic counseling.

Why is Genetic Counseling Important?

Genetic Counseling and Testing help to identify those at an increased risk for hereditary cancer. A Genetic Risk Assessment Provider evaluates your family history and talks about the risks of inherited cancer as well as screening and management for those of increased risk.

If you or a family member has been affected by cancer, genetic counseling may be needed to assess the risk to your loved ones. Genetic counseling will identify and monitor the family risk factor of not only cancer present in the family history but any increased cancer risk.

At the SOMC Cancer Center, our Genetic Risk Assessment Providers are ready to provide genetic expertise and testing to help you and your family make informed medical decisions based on their own personal cancer risk assessment. If you choose to pursue genetic testing, the testing will be coordinated through expert laboratory facilities.

Benefits of Knowing Your Inherited Cancer Risk:
  • Reduce the risk of developing the disease
  • Improve the odds of early detection
